Lesson 84: Idioms About Buildings

"To bank on something/someone" = To be sure of something happening or someone doing something. “依靠某事/某人” =确保某事正在发生或某人在做某事。
Example: Yan knows she can bank on John looking after her. 例子:艳知道她可以依靠约翰照顾她。

"To lock the barn door after the horse has bolted" = To try to make something safe when it is too late. “在拴紧马匹后锁上谷仓门” =尝试在太晚时使东西安全。
Example: Following a robbery, our local Post Office installed a security system, which was like locking the barn door after the horse had bolted. 示例:抢劫之后,我们当地的邮局安装了一个安全系统,就像在用螺栓将马锁上后锁上了谷仓门。

"To be banging/hitting your head against a brick wall" = To keep trying to do something, with little or no success. “要撞墙撞头” =继续尝试做某事,几乎没有成功。
Example: Asking Fred to get to work on time is like hitting your head against a brick wall. 示例:让弗雷德准时上班就像把头撞在砖墙上一样。

"Like a ton of bricks" = To be affected strongly or forcefully by something. “像一吨砖头” =被某物强烈或有力地影响。
Example: The news of her father's death hit Sandra like a ton of bricks. 例子:她父亲去世的消息像一吨砖头一样打击了桑德拉(Sandra)。

"You can't make bricks without straw" = You cannot do something properly without the necessary materials / knowledge. “没有稻草就不能做砖” =如果没有必要的材料/知识,就不能正确地做某事。
Example: You can't expect to grow good vegetables if the soil is poor - you can't make bricks without straw. 示例:如果土壤贫瘠,您不能指望种出好蔬菜-没有稻草就不能制砖。

"To burn your bridges." = To destroy any chance you have of returning to your present circumstances. “烧你的桥。” =为了消除您返回当前状况的任何机会。
Example: By criticising her boss in public, the employee burned her bridges. 示例:员工在公开场合批评老板,烧毁了桥梁。

"Rome wasn't built in a day." = It takes a long time to do an important task. “罗马不是一天建成的。” =完成一项重要任务需要很长时间。

"To build castles in the air." = To have daydreams. “在空中建造城堡。” =做白日梦。
Example: One of Alice's friends is always building castles in the air, assuming that she will one day meet the perfect man. 示例:爱丽丝的一位朋友总是在空中建造城堡,假设她有一天会遇到完美的男人。

"To be in the doghouse." = To be in trouble. “在狗窝里。” =有麻烦。

"To hold the fort." = To substitute for someone in an emergency. “要塞。” =在紧急情况下代替某人。
Example: The receptionist said to her boss, "I have to urgently phone my Mum. Can you hold the fort for 10 minutes, please?" 示例:接待员对老板说:“我必须紧急打电话给妈妈。请问您能把堡垒保持10分钟吗?”

"Close to home." = Near to your personal feelings. “快到家了。” =接近您的个人感受。
Example: The documentary about heart attacks in middle-aged men struck Sandra very close to home. 例子:关于中年人心脏病发作的纪录片在很近的地方袭击了桑德拉(Sandra)。

"To make oneself at home." = To act as if you were in your own home, although you aren't. “让自己在家。” =表现得好像自己在家里一样,尽管你不在。
Example: Alice said to her new boyfriend,who was taking her out: "I'll be another 5 minutes getting ready. There's wine and cheese in the fridge - make yourself at home!" 例子:爱丽丝对要带她出去的新男朋友说:“我还要再等5分钟,准备好了。冰箱里放着葡萄酒和奶酪-让自己在家!”

"A house of cards." = Some poorly designed or constructed thing without a good foundation. “纸牌屋。” =一些基础不好的设计或建造物。
Example: Some people believe that a well-known Australian bank is financially a house of cards. 示例:有些人认为一家知名的澳大利亚银行在财务上是纸牌屋。

"On the house" = Something provided free by a business. “在家里” =企业免费提供的东西。
Example: The restaurant was celebrating 50 years in business, so drinks were on the house. 示例:该餐厅庆祝成立50周年,所以家里喝酒。

"Put your own house in order." = To organize your affairs before criticising other people. “整理自己的房子。” =在批评他人之前组织事务。

"To bring the house down." = To cause a lot of applause or laughter. “把房子推倒。” 引起很多掌声或笑声。

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." = Do not complain about other people if you are as bad as they are.

"Run-of-the-mill." = Something that is ordinary or usual. “普通的。” =普通或普通的东西。

"To go through the mill." = To experience a difficult situation. To struggle to get to your present circumstances. “要经过磨坊。” =经历困难的处境。 努力去适应当前的情况。

"To go through the roof / To hit the roof." = To become very angry. “穿过屋顶/撞到屋顶。” =非常生气。

"The elephant in the room." = A problem or situation that everyone knows about but no one mentions. “房间里的大象。” =每个人都知道但没人提及的问题或情况。
Example: At the economics meeting, the elephant in the room was the enormous level of Government debt. 例子:在经济会议上,会议室里的大象是巨大的政府债务。

"To stonewall." = To stop a discussion by refusing to answer questions, or by talking so much, other people cannot give their opinions. “去石墙。” 为了通过拒绝回答问题或进行过多交谈来停止讨论,其他人无法发表意见。
Example: The politician was accused of stonewalling on the issue of reducing migration. 例子:这位政治家被指控在减少移民问题上受阻。

"To be a tower of strength." = To give strong and reliable support. “成为力量之塔。” =提供强大而可靠的支持。
Example: Terry's friends were a tower of strength when he was terminally ill. 例子:特里在患绝症时,他的朋友们是力量之塔。

"A hole in the wall." = A cash machine. “墙上有个洞。” =自动取款机。
Example: John visited a hole in the wall to get some cash. 例子:约翰参观了墙上的一个洞以获取现金。

"The writing's on the wall." = There are obvious signs that the future is looking bad. “文字在墙上。” =有明显迹象表明未来前景不佳。
Example: After the airline went into administration with billions of dollars of debt, the writing was on the wall. 示例:航空公司以数十亿美元的债务开始管理之后,事情就此浮出水面。

"To climb the wall." / "Climbing the walls." = To be so bored or angry or worried, you become anxious and frustrated. “爬墙。” /“爬墙。” =由于感到无聊,生气或担心,您会感到焦虑和沮丧。
Example: When their autistic son went missing during a bushwalk, his parents were climbing the wall with anxiety. 例子:当他们的自闭症儿子在丛林漫步中失踪时,他的父母焦虑不安地爬上了墙。
