A billabong is a pond left behind after a river changes course. Billabong

The name probably comes from two aboriginal words: "billa" = river and "bong" = dead.

Because there is no steady flow of water, billabongs are stagnant.

They refill during rainy periods. In some areas, they may retain water when rivers dry up.

In tropical parts of Australia, billabongs are likely to contain crocodiles (SL: "croc").

Crocs can run faster than humans and can even climb trees, so camping or even walking close to a billabong is a bad idea!
