Lesson 39: Words that are Both Nouns and Verbs: O-Z

SAND 砂

sand (n), sands (pl): a fine, gritty mineral made of very small pieces of rock. 由非常小的岩石制成的精细砂砾矿物质。

"The sands of time" = a reference to time passing. “时间的沙子”=时间流逝的参考。

to sand (v) 撒沙: To alter the appearance of an object by using sandpaper or sandblasting. 用砂纸或喷砂改变物体的外观。

SENTENCE 句子

sentence (n), sentences (pl): a set of words, expressing an idea, that is complete in itself. 一套表达想法的词,本身就是完整的。

A period of time served by a prisoner as punishment. 一段时间由囚犯服刑作为惩罚。

to sentence (v)判: To determine the punishment to be given to a convicted criminal. 确定对被定罪的罪犯的惩罚。

SERVE 服务

serve (n), serves (pl): a portion of food eaten at a meal by one person (also called "a serving"). 一个人在用餐时吃的一部分食物(也称为“一份”)。

to serve (v)服务: To give a portion of food to someone. 给某人一份食物。

To hit a ball, shuttlecock etc towards an opponent. 向对手击球。

To work for, or do your duty to, some organisation or person. 某些组织或个人的工作或履行职责。

To help achieve a goal. 帮助实现目标。

"To serve under someone" = to work for someone. “为某人服务”=为某人工作。

[SL: "To give someone a serve" = to criticise someone angrily.] [SL:“给某人发球”=批评某人愤怒。]

share (n), shares (pl): A part of something that has been divided between several people. 在几个人之间划分的东西的一部分。

One of the equal parts of the ownership of a business listed on a Stock Exchange. 在联交所上市的业务所有权的一部分。

SHOP 店

shop (n), shops (pl): a place where you can buy goods or services. 您可以购买商品或服务的地方。

The action of buying things at shops, for example, buying food weekly. 在商店买东西的行为,例如每周购买食物。

to shop (v)购物: To buy goods or services at a real shop (called a "bricks and mortar shop"), or online (called a "virtual shop"). 在真实商店(称为“实体店”)或在线(称为“虚拟商店”)购买商品或服务。

[SL: "to shop someone" = to inform on them to the police]. [SL:“去买某人”=告诉他们警察]。

"In the shops" = available to buy. “在商店里”=可以购买。

"To shop around" = to visit more than one shop comparing price and quality of something you want to buy. “去购物”=访问多个商店,比较你想要购买的东西的价格和质量。

ski (n), skis (pl): a long, narrow piece of wood or plastic fastened to a shoe, so that the wearer can move easily over snow. 一块长而窄的木头或塑料固定在鞋子上,使穿着者可以轻松地在雪地上移动。

to ski (v)滑雪: To move across snow on skis. 在滑雪板上穿越雪地。

SLEEP 觉

sleep (n), sleeps (pl): a state of rest when your mind is unconscious. 当你的头脑失去知觉时的休息状态。

A period of sleeping ("a short sleep", "a long sleep", "a deep sleep", "a disturbed sleep", "a good sleep", "a poor sleep"). 一段时间的睡眠(“短暂睡眠”,“长时间睡眠”,“深度睡眠”,“睡眠不安”,“睡眠良好”,“睡眠不佳”)。

to sleep (v)睡觉: To be in a state of sleep. 处于睡眠状态。

SPRING 春天

spring (n), springs (pl): the season of the year between winter and summer. 冬季和夏季之间的一年中的季节。

A piece of curved metal that can be bent but returns to its original shape when the pressure is removed. 一块弯曲的金属,可以弯曲但在压力消失后恢复原状。

A place where water flows out of the ground. 水流出地面的地方。

to spring (v)弹: To move quickly and suddenly. 快速突然行动。

"Spring into view" = to appear suddenly. “春天进入视野”=突然出现。

start (n), starts (pl): the beginning of something. 某事的开始。

to start (v)开始: To begin doing something. 开始做某事。

study (n), studies (pl: note plural ending IES): the act of learning about something. 学习某事的行为。

A preliminary drawing by an artist. 艺术家的初步绘画。

to study (v)研究: To learn about something, especially through an educational course. 了解某些事情,特别是通过教育课程。

TABLE 表

table (n), tables (pl): a flat surface, normally raised off the floor by four legs, on which objects are placed. 一个平坦的表面,通常由四条腿从地板上抬起,放置物体。

A group of people sitting at a table. 一群人坐在一张桌子。

An arrangement of information, especially numbers, in rows and columns. 行和列中的信息排列,尤其是数字。

TALK 谈话

talk (n), talks (pl): an educational speech given to one or more people. 给一个或多个人的教育演讲。

A conversation between two or more people. 两个或更多人之间的对话。

A formal and serious discussion to reach an agreement. 达成协议的正式和认真的讨论。

to talk (v)谈论: To say words aloud (so others can hear you). 大声说话(所以其他人可以听到你)。

To speak to people, animals or objects. 与人,动物或物体交谈。

To discuss something about which you disagree. 讨论你不同意的事情。

There are many "talk" idioms! 有许多“谈话”成语!

"Something to talk about" = an interesting subject to discuss. “谈论的东西”=一个有趣的话题要讨论。

"Talk through your hat" = to speak about something of which you know very little. “通过你的帽子说话”=谈论一些你知之甚少的事情。

"Talk the hind leg off a donkey" = to talk so much you can even bore a donkey into sitting down (an Irish proverb). “从驴子的后腿说话”=谈论这么多,你甚至可以坐下来驴(爱尔兰谚语)。

TENSE 时

tense (n), tenses (pl): The "tense" of a verb shows the time of the action that the verb describes. 动词的“时”表示动词描述的动作的时间。

to tense (v) 拉紧: To make your muscles become stiff and tight. 使你的肌肉变得僵硬和紧绷。

TIME 时

time (n), times (pl): Everyone knows about time, but it is hard to describe exactly. 每个人都知道时间,但很难准确描述。

You could describe is as "a measurable period during which an action happens"? 您可以将其描述为“行动发生的可衡量时期”?

Or, "Time is what a clock measures"? 或者,“时间是时钟衡量的”?

A system of measuring time, for example "Australian Eastern Standard Time". 一种测量时间的系统,例如“澳大利亚东部标准时间”。

TOWER 塔

tower (n), towers (pl): a tall structure, part of a building or standing by itself. 高大的建筑物,建筑物的一部分或自立。

"office tower" = a building in which people work. “办公大楼”=人们工作的建筑物。

" tower block" = a building in which people live. “塔楼”=人们居住的建筑物。

"transmission tower" = a tower supporting radio and TV aerials, or cables supplying electricity. “输电塔”=支持无线电和电视天线的塔,或供电的电缆。

to tower (v)耸立: To be very tall or big, compared with similar objects. 与类似物体相比,要高或大。

train (n), trains (pl): a means of transport, with steel wheels running on fixed steel rails. 一种运输工具,钢轮在固定钢轨上运行。

"To leave something in your wake" = to leave them behind. “留下一些东西在你身后”=让他们落后。

To need someone to be present. 需要有人在场。

"Doesn't want for anything" = has everything they need. “不想要任何东西”=拥有他们需要的一切。

"For want of" = because we did not have. “因为缺乏”=因为我们没有。

WASH 洗

wash (n), washes (pl): (note spelling: extra E): The action of cleaning something with water or another liquid. 用水或其他液体清洁东西的动作。

A heap of clothing or other objects to be washed. 一堆衣服或其他物品要洗。

to wash (v)洗涤: To clean yourself or clothing or other objects, using water or another liquid. 使用水或其他液体清洁自己或衣服或其他物体。

"To do a wash" = to clean clothing or other objects, usually in a washing machine. “洗手”=清洁衣物或其他物品,通常在洗衣机中。

"To have a wash" = to wash your body. Also, "to have a shower" = to wash your body in a shower. “要洗一次”=洗你的身体。 此外,“淋浴”=洗澡时洗身。

To move to a rhythm from side to side. 从一边到另一边移动节奏。

to will (v)将: To try very much to make something happen. 尽力使事情发生。

To leave a person or organisation some part of your assets when you die. 在您死亡时将个人或组织的某些部分留给您。

She willed herself to swim more quickly. 她希望自己能够更快地游泳。

WIN 赢

win (n), wins (pl): an occasion when someone comes first in a competition. 有人在比赛中获得第一名的机会。

"A win-win situation" = a situation where two people involved both gain something. “双赢局面”=两个人都获得了某些东西的情况。

to win (v)赢得: To come first in a competition. 在比赛中获得第一名。

To receive praise or support for your actions. 获得对您的行为的赞扬或支持。

"To win hands down" = to win by a very large margin. “赢得胜利”=以非常大的优势获胜。

WORK 工作

work (n), works (pl): An activity, usually paid, that a person does through physical or mental effort. 通过身体或精神努力完成的一项活动,通常是付费的。

An activity that an animal does through physical effort. 通过体力劳动而不是动物的活动。

Objects or material used while you work, or the result of that work. 工作时使用的物体或材料,或者工作的结果。

"The works" = everything you might want. “作品”=你可能想要的一切。

"The works" also = the inside parts of a machine. “作品”也是机器的内部部件。

to work (v)工作: To do an activity, usually for money. 做一项活动,通常是为了钱。

To be effective. 要有效。
