The airplane taxis under orders from the control tower until it reaches the takeoff runway.

When cleared for takeoff by the control tower, the airplane accelerates down the runway and ascends into the air.

The control tower directs its route and eventually hands off to the next control tower on the route.

At the destination, the airplane descends under orders from the destination's control tower, touches down on the runway, decelerates using its engines in reverse and brakes, then taxis to the destination gate.

Passengers walk up a jetway to a gate (stairs are used at small airports).

Many airports have a curfew, forbidding takeoffs late at night or early in the morning. Note the phrases: "late at night", "early in the morning". Not "late in the night" or "early at morning".

You board a helicopter at the heliport or on a helipad, using a short set of stairs or steps.

Helicopters can take off and land vertically, without a runway. Flights still take place under orders from control towers.

You "get into" a small vehicle such as a car, and "board" a larger vehicle, such as a bus. You "get onto" a cycle.

Trains and trams are restricted to travelling on tracks. A tram driver may be able to change from one track to another by switching points. For trains, points are controlled from a "signal box" or control room.
