Lesson 67: Nothing, Something, Anything - Revision

This lesson revises these three pronouns, with examples from earlier in the lessons.

Here are the definitions from Lesson 50:

nothing = no single thing. 没有=没有一件事。

something = an unspecified or unknown thing. 某事=未指明或未知的事物

anything = a thing, exactly what doesn't matter. 什么东西=一件事,究竟什么都无所谓。

这些“事物”可以是许多名词:事件,动作,观点,单词,结果,状态,信息...

These "things" can be many nouns: events, actions, opinions, words, outcomes, states, information...

Here are examples for all three.

NOTHING 无

English proverb: "If you change nothing, nothing will change." 英国谚语:“如果你什么都不改变,什么都不会改变。”

At the roadworks, three men were leaning on their shovels, doing nothing. 在道路工程中,三名男子靠在铁锹上,什么都不做。

"Emptiness" = the state of being empty, containing nothing. “空虚”=空虚的状态,什么都不包含。

"Nothing of note" = not containing anything important. “没有什么值得注意的”=没有任何重要的东西。

"You ain't seen nothing yet" = there are more exciting things to be seen. “你还没有看到任何东西”=还有更令人兴奋的事情要看。

"To have nothing to show for ..." = to get no advantage from work or other effort. “没有什么可以表现出来的......”=没有工作或其他努力的优势。

Fred: Bugger! Nothing's in the right place. The fruit and veg are on the right, the bread's at the back and the deli's right here, so I'll do the deli first. 弗雷德:布格! 什么都没有在正确的地方。 水果和蔬菜在右边,面包在后面,熟食店在这里,所以我先做熟食店。

To twiddle your thumbs = To do nothing while waiting for someone or something. 转动拇指=在等待某人或某物时不执行任何操作。

It's better to say nothing and let people assume you're stupid, than to open your mouth and prove them right. 最好不要说什么,让人们认为你是愚蠢的,而不是张开嘴并证明他们是正确的。

SOMETHING 某物

age (n): A long time, especially if you are waiting for something to happen. 很长一段时间,特别是如果你在等待某事发生。

alarm (n): Sudden fear or concern that something bad will happen. 突然害怕或担心会发生什么不好的事情。

to amount to (v) 等于: to develop into, to become someone or something. 发展成为某人或某事。

check (n), checks (pl) 验证: an inspection of something to make sure it is safe or correct or what you expect.

to cost (v) 花费: to calculate the value of something. 计算某事物的价值。

design (n), designs (pl) 图案: the mechanical, intellectual or artistic structure of something. 某种东西的机械,智力或艺术结构。

excuse (n), excuses (pl) 原谅: A reason why something did not, can not or will not happen. 为什么事情没有,不能或不会发生。

find (n), finds (pl) 发现: something that is discovered through research, work or accident. 通过研究,工作或事故发现的东西。

finish (n), finishes (pl) 终点: The condition of the surface of something. 某事物表面的状况。

"Fall in love with" = start to love someone or something. “爱上”=开始爱某人或某事。

to name (v)命名: to assign a name to something. 为某事物指定名称。

notice (n), notices (pl) 通知: Warning about something that will happen in the future. 关于将来会发生的事情的警告。

to paint (v): David had a wonderful teacher, who could paint a mental picture of something with few words. 大卫有一位很棒的老师,他可以用很少的文字描绘一些东西。

to phrase (v)短语: To say something in a certain way. 以某种方式说些什么。

"to get your ducks in a row" = to be well organised for something that may happen. “把你的鸭子连成一排”=要为可能发生的事情做好组织。

share (n), shares (pl)股: A part of something that has been divided between several people. 在几个人之间划分的东西的一部分。

"To shop around" = to visit more than one shop comparing price and quality of something you want to buy. “去购物”=访问多个商店,比较你想要购买的东西的价格和质量。

start (n), starts (pl)开始: the beginning of something. 某事的开始。

study (n), studies (pl: note plural ending -IES)书房: the act of learning about something. 学习某事的行为。

talk (v): To discuss something about which you disagree. 讨论你不同意的事情。

want (n), wants (pl)需要: A lack of something. 缺乏某种东西。

ANYTHING 一切

want (v): "Doesn't want for anything" = has everything they need. “不想要任何东西”=拥有他们需要的一切。

want (n): For want of anything better to do, John went for a walk. 由于缺乏更好的事情,约翰去散步。

Is there anything you'd like to know about this operation? 你有什么想知道的这个操作吗?

"On an empty stomach" = without eating anything. “空腹”=没有吃东西。

Alice likes to plan a project thoroughly, and not leave anything to chance. 爱丽丝喜欢彻底地计划一个项目,而不是留下任何机会。

Why can't you do anything right? 为什么你不能做对吗?

"Complete strangers" means not having seen another person, and not knowing anything about them. “完全陌生人”意味着没有见过别人,也不了解他们。

"At no time did I do anything illegal" said the politician. 这位政治家说:“我从来没有做过任何违法的事情。”

Muriel had a bad bout of influenza, and couldn't keep anything down. 穆里尔患上了严重的流感,无法保持任何状态。
